If you don’t come to Mön with your own car, the island’s capital Stege is the best starting point for exploring the island. Mön has a bus service. The bus is waiting for you near the tourist office, on the north side of the drawbridge, which also leads directly to the city center.
From here, Stege is divided in two by its long Storegarde pedestrian path, which leads from the harbor along the towering, Gothic roof of the town church and ends at the medieval Molletorte gates. Steges’ name is derived from “Strike”, whereby wooden stakes were rammed into an inlet as an additional defense against intruders.
Sights in Stege
The Møns Museum, which houses the Empiregaarden and the Thorsvang Collection Museum, are among the most beautiful sights in the port city of Stege. You can find detailed information about these and other attractions here on Møn.
Connected to the Molleporten in Empiregarden, Storegarden 75 (Tue-Sun 10 am-4pm, 30 Kr, www.empiregaarden.dk), a city museum in a former merchant’s house from the 1780s. The collection includes archaeological and ethnographic exhibits ranging from fossil wildlife to fresco-filled churches.

The tourist office of Mön is located near the bridge in Stege. You can’t miss a yellow home. Here you can get a lot of information about nature, animals and nature travel island. This place also sells souvenirs and rents rooms at resorts.

The harbor lock in Stege
The Stege Harbor Castle was built in 1910 and was the unofficial landmark of the harbor for many years. The building consisted of two waiting rooms. One for them 1. and one for that 2nd Class.
The building also served as a port office and the harbor master’s residence. When the school in Stege was rebuilt in 1935, lessons took place here.
The lower part of the harbor lock later served as an apartment, in 1961 the tower was dismantled and has been in the museum in Stege ever since. In 1965 the port lock was then torn down.
The Dampers “Stege” and “Codan” drove a fixed route between Stege and Kalvehave. You can see the model of the harbor lock opposite the tourist information office.
